Thursday, August 16th Anne (Francia) and Irene (Spain)

When we woke up this morning, we already knew that the day that was to happen would be different from the others. Indeed, we were expecting the visit of very important people (the mayor of Plasencia, journalists and other authorities).

While we were doing what we usually do with the users in the morning, we coud notice the presence of cameras, notebooks and so on. Some of the users (among them were Luque and Carlos Alberto) were interviewed as well as some of us (Carlos and I for example). Here are a couple of questions that we were asked:

-was it the first time that we worked with disabled people?

- what were our fears and expectations as regards working with the users?

- What kind of personal benefit do we expected to find when we decided to particip to the camp?

Then, we all shared a brunch with the authorities; everybody mingled, and the journalists continued to interview some of us.
I have to admit that personally, this part of the day was the hardest for me, as the previous night we had gone out and had few hours of sleep during the night. But this is our daily life in the work camp right ? Long and great days, and short nights!( and deep deep inside we love it ! ) Nevertheless, this kind of meeting is very important for Placeat; thanks to it, the association benefits publicity and luckily will have more funds in the future.

After the lunch, we went to piscina del Km-18 with the users. Some of us swam in the water while the others simply enjoyed the heat of the sun in the grass.

After that, we headed up to Plasencia, where the mayor was waiting for us for a formal visit of the city hall. We were explained its history, symbols and customs. Saluki and Javier made the show because they sat under the picture of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. Saluki was pretty embarrassed whereas Javier took its role pretty seriously! -> it was very funny!
What followed next was a couple of visits (among it a church).

During the evening, we had the pleasure to have dinner with the users (picnic) for the first time ! We sat cozily in the grass, chilled out and shared our feelings about the day that had just happened.

Even though I have to admit that I personally did not enjoy this day as I would have liked, it was interesting to be confronted to the local press because it enabled me to express my feelings, fears and expectations of this camp. On this particular day I have let my emotions go out, and it made me realize that what we are doing here is very intense emotionally speaking!

I will end this article by a personnal experience (again !) that has happened to me on this very day:

for the first time since the beginning of the camp, I have had the great privilege and pleasure (as an “international” volunteer) to have had a serious conversation with Ricardo, one of the users. It was a big step for me, as the language is kind of a problem when it comes to communicate with the users.
